J.R.'s weight is below the 5th percentile. He has been on a high-calorie, high-protein diet at

home; J.R. reports that he hasn't been hungry and really hasn't been eating much. Describe
the link between malnutrition and CF.

What will be an ideal response?

The thick, sticky mucus that plugs the GI system causes poor absorption of essential nutrients. In
addition, the pancreas is unable to secrete adequate amounts of pancreatic enzymes necessary
for absorbing essential nutrients. These two factors put children with CF at risk for malnutrition,
underweight condition, and poor life outcomes. Children with CF who are able to maintain adequate
nutrition have a longer life span.
