How has the counseling program developed and changed
• Began with an emphasis on vocational guidance (Frank Parsons) and working in the schools (Jesse B. Davis). Now there are addiction, career, school, clinical mental health, rehabilitation, and college counselors, working a wide variety of settings.
• Moved from very little organization, starting with the NVGA, to ultimately having a very strong professional counseling association: ACA, with many divisions, state chapters, and local chapters.
• It has changed in terms of theoretical orientation, moving from an emphasis on psychoanalysis, to behaviorism, to humanism, to multiculturalism, and ultimately to social justice.
• Counseling has moved from little regulation to now having licensure in all 50 United States
