Explain why a researcher would opt for an ANOVA instead of a series of t tests.

What will be an ideal response?

Every time a t test is performed, there is a certain probability that the null hypothesis is true but will be rejected erroneously. This is a Type 1 error and is marked by the ? level established by the researcher. In a series of t tests, the Type 1 error rate increases exponentially until the likelihood of making a mistake reaches unacceptable levels. This is referred to as family-wise error.
