Describe the difference between the nonpregnant uterus and one shortly prior to the birth of a baby
What will be an ideal response?
The uterus has an inner endometrial lining, which contains glands and tissues into which the embryo can implant. Beneath this layer is the myometrium, a muscular layer that forms the shape of the uterus and supports it. In the nonpregnant state, the uterine lining is sloughed off each month. During pregnancy the uterus expands greatly, often displacing the contents of the pelvis superiorly. The myometrium thickens, and the placenta, an organ that both nourishes the fetus and supplies it with oxygen, takes up additional space within the uterine cavity along with the developing fetus.
