Describe two ways in which the respiratory and circulatory systems have been modified in mammals that dive to great depths

Ans: An example of the respiratory system being modified in order to allow mammals to dive in great depths would be gills. Gills are the respiratory organ for fish. On the other hand, lungs are the respiratory organs for mammals. Mammals, that are aquatic, respire through their lungs. Once this occurs, a complex double loop circulation allows for supplying and even maintaining oxygen. The oxygen may be reserved and the carbon dioxide can follow with a carrying capacity. Aquatic mammals will take a deep breath at the surface of the water and the take the adequate oxygen with them so that they can dive deep. The carbon dioxide that is formed will be carried int he circulation. These animals can minimize the air spaces at huge depths and even tolerate high atmospheric pressures.
