It is recommended that at least 50% of the protein fed to PD patients be of HBV. What does that mean and why is it important?
This is protein of high biological value or animal protein. Since more protein is lost through peritoneal dialysis, it is important that the protein be replaced. Essential as well as nonessential amino acids will be lost so the emphasis is on 50% HBV.
