How might cognates be used to help Spanish-speaking ELLs acquire English vocabulary?

Some cognates have identical spellings but not the same pronunciations, others have similar spellings, and still others have spellings that are similar but might not be similar enough to be recognized. Spanish-speaking students may know some advanced English words without realizing it. English has thousands of words borrowed from Latin, and they often have an innate understanding of Latin roots. Vocabulary development for them often involves simply learning the English label for a familiar Latin concept. But sometimes they may use one of thousands of cognate words to help them develop their English vocabulary.
