Discuss the limitations of standardized IQ assessment and attributes of nondiscriminatory testing
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Many critics believe that the psychometric approach (i.e., use of the IQ test) is an unfair assessment of intellectual capacity. IQ tests are believed to be especially unfair to the minority child because of cultural biases and different language experiences. Test scores should be used with caution and combined with other measures and observational materials when a child or program is being evaluated. Non-discriminatory evaluation is geared to the individual children’s ages, socioeconomic status and cultural background. Assessments should be administered in the individual child’s primary language. Informal interviews, authentic student work, student portfolios, and developmentally appropriate tasks should be administered. No important decisions should be based on a paper and pencil test. Assessment should go beyond standardized test to consideration of creativity, imagination and problems solving.
