Describe how the neo-Freudians (Jung, Adler, Horney, Klein, and Erikson) departed from
Freud's views on personality.
What will be an ideal response?
The answer should briefly highlight the key elements of each neo-Freudian theory. For
Jung, mental structures other than the id, ego, and superego, such as the collective unconscious,
play a role in motivating behavior. For Adler, the need to compensate for one's weaknesses, or to
strive for superiority, is what motivates behavior. Horney felt that a central factor was the
problem posed by anxiety and the strategies people use to cope with these problems. Erikson
emphasized the psychosocial aspects of personality development over the life span. For Melanie
Klein, personality reflected the object relations established in infancy rather than the
psychosexual aspects Freud used.
