Identify and describe at least two ways in which time-out procedures have been used inappropriately with young children. How could the misuse of time-out procedures impact young children with behavioral and/or emotional disabilities?

What will be an ideal response?

Time-out procedures are oftentimes miss- and overused. Student responses may vary, but one possible misuse of time-out procedures that may be mentioned is the fact that children can be placed in time-out too often. Furthermore, the child may not understand the reason why they are being put in time-out. The procedure is not effective in eliminating or reducing the problem behavior if the child does not make the connection between time-out and the behavior that got them there in the first place. Time-out has also been used in isolation. When attempting to remediate or reduce a problem behavior, teachers must also reinforce the student for appropriate behaviors. Time-out cannot be successful in reducing problem behaviors if it is used in isolation.
