Explain the usefulness of a genogram in social work practice.

What will be an ideal response?

If you use a family systems perspective that focuses on relationships within the family, you might want to do a multigenerational genogram,or a visual representation of a family's composition and structure, to get a picture of the family's patterns of relationships. Females are indicated by circles, males by squares; lines indicate marriages and births. A genogram can help to visualize extended family relationships. It may lead a social worker to find new ways to conceptualize family issues, concerns, and strengths.
