Clarify Question
What is the key concept addressed by the question?
        · How are medical specialists in homeostasis?
What type of thinking is required?
o This is an evaluate question because you have to discriminate between different types of doctors to see which ones deal with homeostasis.

What do you already know about homeostasis? What other information is related to the question?
        · You already know that homeostasis is maintaining relatively stable physiological conditions within the body. The endocrine system helps maintain homeostasis by circulating hormones around the bloodstream. Where are the glands of the endocrine system located? The pineal and pituitary glands are located in the brain. Other glands are located all over the body including the thyroid, thymus, ovaries, testis, and pancreas. What is the name of a doctor who specializes in the endocrine system? What about a doctor who specializes on the nervous system?

Choose Answer
Given what you now know, what information is most likely to produce the correct answer?
        · A hematologists studies blood; an osteologist studies bone; an opthamologist studies eyes; an obstetrician-gynecologist studies the female reproductive system; a neurologist studies the nervous system; an endocrinologist studies the endocrine system. These latter two study systems with glands, although if you could make a third choice, you could also select a gynecologist who would deal with the ovary and its hormones.

Reflect on Process
Did your problem-solving process lead you to the correct answer? If not, where did the process break down or lead you astray? How can you revise your approach to produce a more desirable result?
o Answering this question correctly depended not only on knowing what homeostasis is and how it is maintained in the body, but also on evaluating which type of doctor is the most appropriate for helping one maintain homeostasis. Did you select the two correct answers? If so, wonderful. If not, did you chose obstetrician-gynecologist because they know about the ovary and how its hormones affect women’s health? You are right, but the pituitary in the brain and the other glands of the endocrine system like the pancreas and thyroid have a much larger role in the overall homeostasis in the body relative to the gonads.
