The current U.S. economic system uses a high-consumption, high-waste approach that depends upon ever increasing economic growth. Why is this approach unsustainable in the long run?
What will be an ideal response?
The main reason is that we live on a finite world and have a fixed resource base. Our current economic model depends on constantly consuming more goods and producing large amounts of waste. This economic model is doomed to failure because it assumes that high-quality matter will always be plentiful at a low cost. The only truly sustainable path is one in which we imitate nature. That path means we need to switch over to perpetual energy sources like solar or wind energy and institute a widespread matter recycling and reuse program.
