Of the several known modes of genetic inheritance, three mechanisms are most important. Identify and describe each of the three mechanisms.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: 1. Autosomal dominant inheritance is characterized by expression of a trait (i.e., hearing loss) even if the gene for it is carried on only one chromosome of a matched pair.
2. Autosomal recessive inheritance is characterized by the fact that both genes of a pair must carry the characteristic in order for it to be expressed. An example of this type of inheritance is Usher syndrome.
3. The third mechanism of genetic transmission is X-linked inheritance. In the X-linked form of this transmission mode, the parents are apparently healthy, and the altered gene is associated with the X chromosome of the male offspring.
