Currently, there is no legislative mandate that requires transition planning as students move from preschool special education programs to kindergarten. Develop an argument about why there should be a mandate for such transition plans.
What will be an ideal response?
Student answers will vary widely on this question. However, students will most likely be able to articulate the requirements for transition plans for infants and toddlers to preschool programs as a guide. The goals of a transition plan should be to (1) ensure continuity of services, (2) minimize disruption of the child and family environment, and (3) promote the individual’s function in the natural environment. Students may also argue that transitions create “ripple effects” within various systems. When a child moves transitions from one program to another, it changes and disrupts the ecology of that system. The more a system is disrupted, the greater the challenges (and stress) associated with transitions. Thus, it would make sense to have mandated transition plans for preschoolers with disabilities when moving to general public education settings such as kindergarten.
