Answer: Salt marshes contain a lot more sulfur compounds than freshwater wetlands due to the high concentration of sulfate in saltwater. When a lot of organic carbon is produced, the decomposition of the organic matter uses up all of the oxygen and results in the respiration (reduction) of sulfate which produces sulfides. The sulfides have a strong smell. Although some sulfides are present in freshwater, the concentration is very low compared to saltwater. In freshwater wetlands, anoxic decomposition produces more methane because of the lack of sulfate or other terminal electron acceptors.
