The basal/anthology program is a traditionally used and proven method for teaching reading. Basals involve a series of readers or anthologies plus supplementary materials that gradually increase in difficulty, following a logical and increasingly advanced step-by-step process that covers beginning reading through the sixth-grade level. They offer a standardized packet of materials, a wide variety of anthology selections, carefully planned units and lessons, and structured methods and devices, as well as a teacher?s manual and a wealth of activities. Once totaling more than a dozen programs, today there are four: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, Scott Foresman, and Open Court (SRA/McGraw-Hill).
