What did it mean for medieval painters to conceive of their paintings of Christ's crucifixion as true?

What will be an ideal response?

The truth of such art was not the truth of accurate representation. It was the truth of conveying something so meaningfully and effectively that it has emotional power, in this case inspiring faith. The primary purpose of medieval art was to express and inspire faith, not to provide a mere documentary.
