Discuss the findings of researchers regarding the death penalty as a deterrent

What will be an ideal response?

Considerable empirical research has been carried out on the effectiveness of capital punishment as a deterrent. Three methods have been used to study the effect on crime versus life imprisonment. Immediate impact studies calculate the effect that a well-publicized execution has on the short-term murder rate. A time series analysis compares long-term trends in murder and capital punishment rates. And contiguous state analysis compares murder rates in states that have the death penalty with murder rates in a similar state that has abolished capital punishment. The key issue in the capital punishment debate is whether it can actually lower the murder rate and save lives. Over a 60-year period, most researchers have failed to show any deterrent effect of capital punishment.
