How do the examples used during the first few lessons of instruction on reading and writing decimals representing thousandths differ from later examples? Include an appropriate example for each set of examples
What will be an ideal response?
During the first several lessons, examples should concentrate entirely on thousandths numerals. Examples may include the following: .800, .080, .008. In these sets, two of the three digits in each decimal are zeros and one digit is a numeral other than zero. In each decimal, the nonzero digit is placed in another position. After several lessons comprised of thousandths decimals, the teacher presents examples including tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. In these example sets, minimally different groupings should be included to focus student attention on the number of digits after the decimal point: .4, .04, .004 or .70, .070, .700.
