Explain the problem in American high schools highlighted by Robert Crosnoe's (2011) book, Fitting In, Standing Out.
What will be an ideal response?
Crosnoe explained that a major detriment to the academic achievement of high school students is the massive competition offered by the social life component of high school. A great deal of a student's mental and emotional energy is spent on fitting into a complex network of peer groups and cultures that prioritize conformity. Instead of being primarily focused on getting an education, many students see their primary job as navigating these social demands. Those students who fail at this task can be ostracized and stigmatized, especially those who are obese or gay.
