What are some undesirable effects of round-robin reading?
What will be an ideal response?
The answer should include at least 3 of the following:
• Its tendency to arouse undue anxiety in readers who may then come to loath reading rather than pursue it. Some students, waiting for their turn to read, spend their anticipation time trying to deal with trembling hands and upset stomachs.
• It diminishes readers' self-monitoring and self-regulation of reading. During round robin reading other students often correct miscues and errors before the reader has a chance to self-correct. The practice may lead away from the ideal of developing self-regulating readers.
• It may stimulate excessive sub-vocalization. We know that sub-vocalization can help readers comprehend texts and that skilled readers rarely sub-vocalize every word in a text. However, if students slow down their reading rates to repeat each word to themselves as a student reads aloud in class, that practice could transfer to silent reading tasks, stimulate excessive sub-vocalization, and slow readers' rates through habituation.
• It may reduce attention to meaning construction. In anticipation of reading aloud to the class, students look ahead to see what they are expected to read and to rehearse their lines. However, that means they pay less attention to comprehending the whole text. Furthermore, those who've read ahead are likely to get in trouble when called upon to read but don't know the place to start.
• It uses time that could be better spent on more meaningful and engaging activities. Students could be developing other reading skills or building and extending their knowledge base rather than consuming time with an activity that has less educational value.
