Define the four elements of sociologist Caryl Rusbuilt's response typology, including the dimensions of constructive/destructive and active/passive. In your description, include one example of each type as part of a conflict scenario. (Examples may vary.)
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Sample student response:
The exit typology is active destructive behavior that ends in threatening to leave or leaving. An example of this behavior is an individual who quits her job and walks out after being disciplined for tardiness.
The voice typology is active constructive behavior that tries to improve the conflict conditions. An example of this behavior is a woman who discusses her feelings during an argument with her boyfriend about where to spend a vacation together. She makes an effort to explain her views instead of blaming him for feeling differently.
The neglect response is passive destructive behavior that ignores active engagement of the issue and leads to deterioration of the relationship. An example of this behavior is a man who is unhappy in his job, but makes little effort to change the situation. He shows up and does just barely enough to get through the day.
The loyalty response is passive constructive behavior demonstrated by optimistically waiting for conditions to improve. An example of this behavior is a man who is unhappy because his wife can't spend weekends at home due to a heavy work schedule. But he understands that the situation will change, and passively waits for this to happen.
