Children learning to read words go through 4 stages: pre-alphabetic, partial alphabetic, full alphabetic, and consolidated alphabetic. In the pre-alphabetic stage, students recognize words based on visual, non-alphabetic features. In the partial-alphabetic stage students form partial connections between letters and sounds. In the full-alphabetic stage students are able to form connections with all letters in a word, in which they are “glued to print”. Finally, in the consolidated alphabetic stage students are able to identify words by looking at larger chunks of text, syllables or phonograms.
