Despite its roots in folk and popular music styles, jazz has rarely been associated with popular music. Why do you think this is true?
What will be an ideal response?
There is a complexity in jazz that makes it less accessible to the average listener. For example, the extended format of jazz is more related to art music than it is to the three or four-minute popular song. In addition, the rhythmic complexity and extended harmonies of jazz take the listener musically beyond the simplicity of most popular musics.
