Explain how the overuse of antibiotics could lead to the evolution of drug resistant strains of bacteria.

What will be an ideal response?

Just as any population of organisms includes variants with unusual traits, drug resistance occurs naturally in certain bacteria in a population. When a person takes an antibiotic, the antibiotic kills the susceptible organisms, while the resistant strains continue to live and multiply, with less competition from susceptible strains. When antibiotics are used, there is selective pressure for resistance.
