Beth was born with cleft palate in which her hard palate was not completely fused. Determine the affected bones and predict the impact on the oral and nasal cavities

What will be an ideal response?

The maxillary bones meet at the intermaxillary suture and form the anterior portion of the hard palate. Each palatine bone has two plates. The horizontal plates form the posterior part of the hard palate while the two perpendicular plates extend vertically to form part of the lateral walls of the nasal cavity. Failure of the maxillary and palatine bones to fuse leaves a hole in the roof of the mouth that connects the mouth (oral cavity) directly to the nasal cavity.
