When an organism learns that thunder and lightning co-occur, associative long-term potentiation takes place. Discuss the neurobiological events that lead to this association.

What will be an ideal response?

This type of learning is dependent on the NMDA receptors and their ability to serve as coincidence detectors. A strong stimulus (such as thunder) causes the depolarization of the NMDA receptors. Alone, this is insufficient to cause an association. This depolarization, however, allows the magnesium plug that was blocking the NMDA channel to be released. Then, when lightning occurs later, it will cause release of glutamate, activating the NMDA receptors. The NMDA receptors have to have both components-voltage change and NT binding-to serve as a coincidence detector.

A researcher wishes to estimate the reliability of the FYI (Functional Youth Indicator) - a new test of adolescent shyness

The test is composed of a total of 30 items, and the researcher splits the scoring in order to compare each subject's score on the odd numbered items with those on the even numbered items. A total of 10 teen-age males was randomly selected and their scores were as follows: Odd Even Subject # X Y 1. 10 9 2. 8 11 3. 12 12 4. 10 9 5. 11 10 6. 9 10 7. 10 9 8. 15 14 9. 5 6 10. 10 10 Estimate the reliability of the whole test.
