Discuss the importance of the early petroleum industry and its effects on civilization
What will be an ideal response?
Perhaps one of the most widely used products in the world, and one that drastically transformed the world in many ways, was petroleum and its byproducts. Early uses of petroleum byproducts like kerosene were for lighting and heat, which nearly transformed the world's use of coal and candles. Petroleum byproducts were also used for fuel to propel the growing network of transportation, from ships to cars, making transportation throughout the world easier and more affordable. Two distillations of petroleum, gasoline and diesel fuel, were used in engines for automobiles, making personal transportation a revolutionary idea. This, in turn, drove a new industry, automobile production, led by the development of the first mass-produced car by the Ford Company.
