What is immigration? How does immigration threaten the security of our borders?
What will be an ideal response?
Key points—Immigration refers to the act of entering a country for the purposes of
work or residency. There are several entry areas that are regulated by the government
that thousands of people pass through each day to enter the country legally. With over
88 million individuals arriving into our gateway airports each year, and millions of others
entering through our borders with Mexico and Canada, the task of ensuring compliance
with our entry laws is significant. Individuals who wish to enter the United States from a
foreign country must obtain a visa. Despite several attempts to reform our immigration
system, it remains a long and challenging system to navigate. As a result, many still
choose to enter the country illegally. Throughout the twenty-first century, there have
been several bills introduced that are designed to address concerns over illegal
immigration.
