Your five-year-old daughter's teacher says that your child has been having problems seeing the whiteboard in the classroom. The doctor checks and diagnoses her with myopia. Does this problem have to do with a cloudiness of the lens, pressure problems, or the length of the eyeball? Pick one of the choices, explain the problem, and describe the treatment.
What will be an ideal response?
Her eyeball is too long. Because of the depth of the eyeball, the light rays, when refracted by the cornea and lens, are focused in front of the retina. This creates the blurriness of the image. The focal point of the image where the light rays converge needs to be extended backwards onto the retina. Since the child is too young for contact lenses, the solution is for her to wear eyeglasses so that the divergent lenses will spread out the light rays and cause the focal point to move farther back.
