Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by bacteria transmitted through contaminated water or food. The source of contamination is usually feces of infected people. This disease causes acute diarrhea and vomiting, but about 75% of people infected do not show symptoms even though the bacteria are present in their feces for 1-2 weeks and can spread the disease to others. Among those who do have symptoms, about 20% will have acute watery diarrhea and severe dehydration that can be fatal. Although cholera is treatable by rehydration and antibiotics, it is extremely potent and can kill within hours. Particularly at risk are those with low immunity levels, especially those with other diseases such as HIV, or malnourished children.
