Discuss the relationship between price of illicit drugs, illicit drug use, and crime
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Answers should discuss the economically compulsive crime circumstances in which crimes (particularly robbery and burglary) occur as a result of needing money to purchase drugs. Crime can also occur as a result of being under the influence of a particular drug. Alcohol shows a relationship between use and crime or violence. Marijuana use on its own may not cause crime, but the lifestyle of those who use marijuana might be more likely to commit crime. Heroin produces a passive state of mind, which reduces the inclination toward violence, but a need for continued use for the drug may lead to crime as a means to pay for the habit. There is evidence to suggest that heroin price-property crime relationship exists. Methamphetamines did show that higher prices led to a general reduction in related property crimes and a decline in use. Appears that the crime rates are dependent on the type of person that uses that particular type of drug. In general, high prices tend to show reduction in property crime.
