Briefly describe the meaning of gear ratios.
What will be an ideal response?
Gear ratios express the mathematical relationship of one gear to another. Gear ratios can be varied by changing the diameter and number of teeth of the gears in mesh. A gear ratio also expresses the amount of torque multiplication between two gears. The ratio is obtained by dividing the diameter or number of teeth of the driven gear by the diameter or teeth of the drive gear. If the smaller driving gear had 10 teeth and the larger gear had 40 teeth, the ratio would be 4:1. The gear ratio tells you how many times the driving gear has to turn to rotate the driven gear once.
