What are the downsides of turning a patient's account over to a collection agency?
What will be an ideal response?
If, due to an error, the patient never received any bills, then turning the account over to a collection agency unfairly lowered the patient's credit rating. The medical facility that made the error could be held liable for damages resulting from the bad credit rating. Even without the credit rating problem, inappropriate use of a collection agency usually results in the patient switching to a different facility. Another downside is that collection agency fees can consume the majority of the money collected.
