Commercial media accounts represent any written, drawn, or recorded materials produced for general or mass consumption (e.g., newspapers, videotapes, maps, blogs, etc.). An example of commercial media as an unobtrusive data source is Molotch and Boden's study of the congressional Watergate hearings of 1973. They used transcriptions from videotapes of the hearings to examine the conversational exchanges between relevant parties during the hearings with the goal of determining how people invoke routine conversational procedures to gain power. Using this written account, Molotch and Boden developed a play-by-play account of domination in the making. They concentrated on the audio portion of the videotapes.
