It is argued in this chapter that structural family theory can facilitate the social worker’s social justice activities. Do you agree? If so, share some examples of how this could be done.

What will be an ideal response?

Structural family theory was specifically developed to help the kinds of families that are often encountered by social work practitioners—those experiencing multiple problems including poverty, illness, unemployment, physical abuse, substance abuse, absent members, and acting out. With this theoretical approach social workers can easily incorporate the environmental interventions (through referrals, linkages, and advocacy) that provide families with additional resources toward enhanced social functioning, since these resources bolster desired family structure.
