The IEEE uses specific letter codes with the standards to help sort out the differences so you know what you are implementing or supporting. All the standards have names in the following format: "10GBase" followed by two other characters, called xy. The "x" stands for the type of fiber (usually, though not officially) and the wavelength of the laser signal; the "y" stands for the Physical layer signaling standard.
