• The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), formerly the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), is responsible for housing illegal aliens pending a hearing or deportation back to their home country. Individuals are usually detained in three ways: first, if caught while attempting to illegally enter the United States; second, if they are arrested for commission of a crime and then held because they are in the United States without permission; and third, if there are raids by ICE officials of housing or workplaces and the officials find individuals who are in the country illegally. Whenever an illegal alien is detained, they are subject to potential deportation.
