As with some other ethnic and racial groups, the educational system relates to and is relevant to the mainstream culture and neglects to reflect or relate to indigenous cultures. For example, most educational systems ignore the history, values, norms, and traditions of the mainstream culture. Education is taught in the national language with little bilingual instruction. Traditional cultures, including their languages, are often devalued. School schedules do not adjust to the daily or seasonal structure of indigenous livelihoods such as in pastoral or nomadic societies. Most non-indigenous teachers do not have the training they need in cultural understanding, and indigenous elders are not involved in goal setting for the schools.
