Summarize and discuss the fossil evidence indicating that eukaryotic cells appeared as much as
1.2 billion years ago. Give examples of some of these early eukaryotic organisms. What will be an ideal response?
The Mesoproterozoic rocks 1.2 billion years old in Canada contain fossils of the oldest known
eukaryotes. Other Proterozoic rocks have older fossils, but the affinities are unknown. The oldest
megafossil was found in 2.1 billion year old rock in Michigan. In addition, acritarchs, which are
probably cysts of floating algae, are found in the rocks. Vase-shaped skeletons have been found,
and have tentatively been identified as cysts of algae.
