We have used an experimental setup similar to Example 10.1 to determine the value of a spring constant. The deflection caused by the corresponding weights are given in the accompanying table. What is the value of the spring constant?
As explained in Example 10.1, often when connecting experimental
force-deflection points, you may not obtain a straight line that goes through each
experimental pint. This is the case for this problem. In this case, we will try to
come up with the best fit to the data points. Therefore, first, we plot the data and
then draw a line that best fits the data points. The slope of the line is
approximately equal to 5.8 lb/in. Thus, the value of spring constant is
approximately k = 5.8 lb/in.
