Collaboration is an assertive style that assumes there is a viable solution for all, or an "I win–You win" solution. It is grounded in analytic remarks/dialogue, show of support for others, and shared responsibility. Collaboration is often the most effective but takes time and energy. High on assertiveness, high on cooperation.
Accommodation occurs when you cooperate at the highest level and let others have their way in relationship to the conflict. This level of cooperation can be at the expense of your own perspective, needs, goals, objectives, or desired outcome. The outcome tactic is "I lose–You win." Low on assertiveness, high on cooperation.
Compromise relies on discovering the most mutually acceptable solution. It is the most moderate in assertiveness and cooperation and supports an "I win a little–You win a little" solution. No one is completely satisfied, but all agree this is best. Medium on assertiveness, medium on cooperation.
Competition uses the outcome tactic of "I win–You lose" and occurs when you are very assertive about achieving your goal without the help of others or their perspectives. This style is often characterized by personal criticism, uncooperativeness, aggressiveness, domination, and denial of responsibility. It emphasizes your concerns over the concerns of others and relies heavily on your powers. High on assertiveness, low on cooperation.
Avoidance occurs when you simply avoid the issue and don't pursue any resolution—an "I lose–You lose" tactic. Low on assertiveness, low on cooperation.
