What did government officials in South Africa claim apartheid would do? What did apartheid actually do?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Although the official government propaganda claimed that apartheid would permit Blacks and Whites to develop separately and equally, the system was clearly intended to solidify White privilege and Black powerlessness. By keeping Blacks poor and powerless, White South Africans created a pool of workers who were both cheap and docile. Whites of even modest means could afford the luxuries of personal servants, and employers could minimize their payrolls and their overhead.
