In 2001 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was implemented across the United States. The primary purpose of NCLB was to close the achievement gap between rich and poor students by holding schools accountable for students' learning. This program has found many critics, however, and the Obama administration has put into place a "Race to the Top" program that undoes a lot of NCLB policies and focuses on producing more equipped workers to improve the U.S. economy.
