Discuss how the Buddha is depicted in paintings or statues.
What will be an ideal response?
The Buddha is usually depicted as seated in the lotus meditational position. His eyes are closed or mostly closed, symbolizing that he has shut out the distractions of the world to find release within himself. He often has a circular mark on his forehead, called an urna, showing that he has achieved enlightenment. His large earlobes are a traditional Indian symbol of nobility. He is dressed modestly and is physically strong and healthy, but not overfed. He holds his hands, and often his arms, in one of a variety of formal positions called mudras
