Explain how torch angle and the distance between the inner cone and the metal affect the rate of heating.
What will be an ideal response?
The torch angle and the angle between the inner cone and the metal have a great effect on the speed of melting and size of the molten weld pool. The ideal angle for the welding torch is 45°. As this angle increases toward 90°, the rate of heating increases. As the angle decreases toward 0° to the plate's surface, the rate of heating decreases. The distance between the inner cone and the metal ideally should be l/8 in. to 1/4 in. (3 mm to 6 mm). As this distance increases, the rate of heating decreases; as it decreases, the heating rate increases.
