Use social information processing theory to discuss how social media use has affected one of your communication relationships. Use examples to explain your response.

What will be an ideal response?

- Social information processing (SIP) theory is a theory suggesting that electronically mediated relationships grow only to the extent that people gain information about each other and use that information to form impressions.
* Verbal cues. When individuals are motivated to create impressions and develop relationships, they use any verbal signs available to communicate. Thus, social media users create fully formed impressions of others based solely on the content of their digital messages.
* Extended time. Social media used to exchange social information and form impressions of others is much slower than real-life interactions. Given sufficient time, however, there is little reason to believe electronic-mediated relationships will be weaker than any other relationships.
- Student examples will vary.
