In a brief essay, discuss the role that rock ‘n’ roll played in integrating music.
What will be an ideal response?
Prior to rock ‘n’ roll, popular music was largely segregated, with White music being played on the radio and Black music being played more on jukeboxes in bars and clubs. Rock ‘n’ roll brought together hillbilly and rhythm and blues music to create something new that had little in common with the popular Tin Pan Alley and big band swing music of the 1930s and 1940s. This new form of music was popular with young people in the 1950s and received extensive airplay for both Black and White audiences.
