Describe the current state of the economies of the Central Asian countries and explain why these countries are in general so underdeveloped.

What will be an ideal response?

Overall, the economies of Central Asia are relatively weak. Even though many of the former Soviet republics possess oil and natural gas, the pipelines to transport this resource to customers are still under construction. In addition, these countries must work to establish their own ties to outside countries, after having been dependent on external relations from the central government of the Soviet Union for decades. Afghanistan also has extensive
resources, but historically, it has been a very traditional society, with the vast majority of its people engaged in subsistence agriculture and pastoralism. The region as a whole is landlocked, which is an additional impediment to participation in the world economy.
